Asia and the ski jump:

I trust you find it nauseatingly familiar.  A similar graph with the same shape and the same time scale kicks off my own summary of how fertility fails when consanguinity is abandoned.

It looks rather like a ski jump.  That’s kind of nice.  But here is a graph of a simulation I did with a computer of a population that is subject to pre-zygotic infertility from lack of consanguinity.

M.L. Herbert & M.G. Lewis Fluctuation of fertility with number in a real insect population and a virtual population African Entomology 21(1): 119–125 (2013)

It’s the same curve but it goes a bit farther.  Fertility falls, begins to level off and then quite abruptly, over a generation or two.  The whole thing goes extinct.  It still looks like a ski jump, but the skier didn’t have much speed at the critical moment.

Just when that moment will be is not clear.  Singapore will probably get there first; they already have the world’s lowest fertility.  When they do it will be possible to deduce when our due date is.  It will also almost surely be too late.
